Step inside a lakeside medieval fortress and cross the drawbridge into history. Climb the main tower for sweeping views over Lake Garda and explore the castle’s unique dock.
Begin your visit at the iconic Castello Scaligero, a striking 14th-century fortress guarding the entrance to Sirmione’s historic centre on Lake Garda. Surrounded by water and accessed by a drawbridge, this castle is one of Italy’s best-preserved examples of lakeside fortification, offering a journey through centuries of history and architecture.
Wander the castle’s courtyards and ramparts, where the Della Scala family once ruled Verona and the surrounding region. Discover the open-gorged towers and the exceptional 14th-century fortified dock, the only one of its kind still standing. Explore the revelin at the entrance, cross the main courtyard, and walk the allures that connect the three corner towers. Ascend 146 steps to the 37-metre-high keep, originally the castellan’s residence, for panoramic views of Lake Garda and the Sirmione peninsula. The castle’s restoration, begun in 1919, has brought back the brilliance of its medieval features, including the return of lake waters to the ancient docks.
Your ticket includes access to the keep, where you can enjoy the atmosphere of centuries past and take in the unique perspective from the top. Please note, the dock area is accessible only during guided tours, which are not included in the standard entry ticket. The visit concludes within the castle grounds, leaving you free to continue exploring Sirmione’s charming centre or relax by the lake at your own pace.
