Description
This art restoration workshop in Verona takes place in a working laboratory a short walk from the cathedral. You do not watch from the side: you try the craft yourself, under a restorer who trained in Venice, in a small group.
The session opens with a short introduction to how restorers think: keep the original materials, stabilise what has aged, rebuild damaged parts instead of replacing them. Then you turn to antique decorative frames, which often arrive with cracks, missing ornaments and worn finishes. The work follows the steps of a real repair:
- mixing a filler made with fine sawdust and applying it where a part of the decoration is missing
- modelling the stucco to recreate the relief patterns of the frame, with professional tools
- sanding, filing and smoothing everything until the new parts blend with the old
- choosing tones and painting, including gold-style finishes
Along the way the expert talks about real restoration projects, so you see why conservation matters and how much patience it takes. Materials and tools are all provided, and the session lasts about an hour and a half.
It suits curious travellers and art lovers. There is no professional certification at the end, but you leave knowing how a frame is brought back to life.
